1. The Konark Wheel in the NSS badge has 8 bars signifying the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation at all times.
2. Red color in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.
3. Blue color represents the cosmos, symbolizing that NSS is a tiny part ready to contribute to mankind's welfare.

1. To gain an understanding of the community where the volunteers serve.
2. To comprehend oneself in relation to the neighborhood one lives in.
3. To become aware of the needs and issues in their neighborhood and get involved in solving them.
4. To foster a sense of social responsibility and civic duty among volunteers.

Activities of NSS are divided into two major groups:
